Artistic lingerie

Artistic lingerie will support cancer clinic

Durham’s premier gallery for fine craft and original art is pairing up with Durham’s Gala of Hope to raise money in a creative way. Meta4 Contemporary Craft will unbutton a unique exhibit at the end of August as part of the first annual “Bras for a Cause” event. The show will feature dozens of altered and fabricated bras to raise money for the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre’s Breast Cancer Clinic and its programs.

Anyone may create a piece using a whole spectrum of media and techniques. They can be hand crafted, sculpted, painted, quilted or embellished in any way, but must incorporate the front, sides and straps of the bra. They can be wearable or not. Prizes will be awarded for the top three entries and winners will be decided by the number of raffle tickets purchased for each bra.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing the wide range of entries, from artistic to elegant to just crazy,” said Meta4 co-owner Birgitta MacLeod. “My partners and I didn’t hesitate to get involved, as the event spotlights both art and women’s issues,” she added. Meta4 Contemporary Craft Gallery is owned by four women artists and features the work of approximately 100 artists living within 100 miles of Port Perry. The gallery is located in the heart of Port Perry at 200 Queen Street.

Bras for a Cause will premier at an opening reception on Thursday, August 30 at Meta4 Contemporary Craft Gallery. The colourful intimates will be on display at Meta4 through Labour Day weekend and later in September at the Oshawa Centre mall.

Deadline to submit your piece is August 24. Give a title to your design, include a short paragraph about it and be sure to attach a small label inside with your name. For more information, contact Meta4 Contemporary Craft Gallery at 905-985-1534 or the Gala of Hope office at 705-786-0507.

Steel Magnolias

steelmagnolias.jpga play by Robert Harling
directed by Ruth Smith

November 15 – 17 and 22 – 24, 2007

This play is set in a small rural town in southern Louisiana around 1980, and covers nearly three years in the lives of six women. The women, Southern belles whose spouses are dead, somewhat psychotic, or gone, spend much of their time in the local beauty salon, run by a colorful lady named Truvy. They gossip, fight, make up, get their hair done, and find strength to battle the inevitable tragedy that strikes. They are the steel magnolias of the title, seeming frail and vulnerable, yet fighters through and through.

Harling’s dialogue is witty and bright, and we are first into the tightly knit circle of friends. The characters are beautifully written and strangely loveable, and the story is compelling and real. This is a touching play, very funny, very sad, and in the end very human.

La Cage aux folles

Book by Harvey Fierstein
Music & Lyrics by Jerry Herman
directed by Roger Varley

October 4-6 and 11-13, 2007

More familiar to North Americans as The Birdcage, a movie starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane, La Cage aux Folles, the Broadway musical, returns to its French roots in this tale of a gay couple who run a nightclub in St.Tropez. Their risque world of glitz, glamour and music is thrown into turmoil when their son announces he is marrying the daughter of a moral crusader. Funny and poignant, La Cage aux folles proves that, in any family, love conquers all.

AhMen! Project Fundraising

Attention Artists!

The AhMen! Project is underway and so are the plans for the fundraising! Artists are invited to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to contribute a piece of their own work to a Silent Auction to be held this fall. Last year there were some incredible artworks created for The M.O.M. Project that comprised a diverse selection – not only for buyers, but for the collective representation of our generous artist community. It is a fantastic and worthwhile project, and one that artists can be proud to contribute to and be recognized for.

With the theme of this production being men, it would be ideal if art donations could involve a masculine essence – through subject, colour, interpretation, function or appeal. The sale will be timely for holiday purchasing. However…so that there will be ample time to promote these pieces with photographs and credits, it would be greatly appreciated if works could be finished and delivered by August 20th. Information for drop off will follow.

Please consider contributing your unique talents to this project. Under the leadership and vision of Anna Mackay-Smith, last year’s M.O.M. Project netted $10,000 which was generously donated to three charitable organizations, and the preliminary Art Raffle generated $7,000 from the nineteen works of art gleaned from area artists who helped initiate these fund-raising efforts for the project. That’s not all… it also illuminated the enthusiastic, talented, and compassionate community we are made up of. Here’s your chance to be a part of a great project while taking a unique and celebrated advantage of drawing exposure to your work.

Thanks to you!
